Every Friday during Lent (around 5:00 PM) at the Franciscan Basilica in Krakow, you can participate in a unique Passion Service of the Archconfraternity of the Passion of the Lord. Members of the Archconfraternity hold the so-called Jerusalem Procession, a service commemorating the discovery of Christ's cross by St. Helena, and reflect on fifteen scenes from the Passion of the Lord. The Archconfraternity of the Lord's Passion, also known as the Archconfraternity of the Good Death, was founded in 1595 by Father Marcin Szyszkowski, a canon of the Krakow cathedral chapter, later Bishop of Krakow (although it most likely continued the tradition of a 15th-century association of worshippers of the Suffering Lord Jesus and Our Lady of Sorrows). In 1597, Pope Clement VIII approved the brotherhood and granted it numerous indulgences. A few years later, Pope Paul V raised the Brotherhood of the Lord's Passion to the rank of an archconfraternity, granting it further indulgences and privileges. From its inception, the brotherhood enjoyed great popularity and was one of the most important religious associations in Krakow. Its membership included townspeople, clergy, and even kings (including Sigismund III Vasa, Władysław IV, John Casimir, and John III Sobieski). The anonymity of participation was ensured by the attire: black habits and hoods with cut-out eyeholes, which remain unchanged to this day. The brotherhood's members carried out extensive charitable and social activities: they cared for prisoners, young apprentices in craft guilds, and the sick and poor. They brought priests to the dying and organized funerals for the poorest (hence its second name – the Archconfraternity of the Good Death). After World War II, the state authorities restricted the Archconfraternity's activities by issuing a law in 1949 prohibiting the activities of religious associations. At that time, the brothers limited themselves to participating in the Lenten liturgy. Currently, the Archconfraternity serves a liturgical function, maintaining traditional attire and practicing penitential liturgies. On Fridays during Lent, at 5:00 PM, the brothers begin the Jerusalem Procession from the monastery cloisters to the Chapel of the Passion of the Lord. Upon reaching the Chapel, they stop in the center, in front of the so-called Lantern, decorated with four paintings depicting the Lord's prayer in the Garden of Olives, Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Veronica, and the Lord Jesus on the Cross. There, the Fifteen Degrees of the Passion of the Lord is celebrated, consisting of contemplating fifteen events related to Christ's suffering: the Prayer in the Garden of Olives, the Kiss of Judas, the Trial of Annas, the Trial of Caiaphas, the Trial of the Sanhedrin, Pilate, and Herod, the Stripping and Scourging, the Crowning with Thorns and the Cloaking with Scarlet, the Condemnation to Death by Cross, the Carrying of the Cross, the Nailing to the Cross, the Drinking of Bile and Vinegar, the Giving Up of the Spirit, the Piercing with a Spear, the Descent from the Cross, and the Entombment. Between each "degree" of the Passion, the brothers sing the refrain "Memento homo mori – Remember, O man, unto death, and repent for your sins." Their faces are covered with pointed hoods. The Archbrother, who has been in the Archconfraternity the longest, carries the cross. The two oldest brothers carry the skulls of a man and a woman, placed on wooden poles. During the singing of penitential psalms, the participants kneel, and the members of the brotherhood lie prostrate. After the singing of the Bitter Lamentations and the Passion sermon, the service concludes with the kissing of the relic of the Holy Cross. www.isf.edu.pl/a/aktualnosci/arcybractwo-meki-panskiej
