Investigating the health effects of pesticide exposures among farmers - Research Impact [by Mahidol]

“I don’t see anyone who hasn’t used chemicals.” We don’t have a choice. Nobody likes to use chemicals, but if we don’t use them, our crops will die.” “If we are the only ones who don’t use them, all of our crops will die after 2 weeks.” These are quotes from farmers who have ignorantly used chemicals in agriculture. They have no clues that chemicals have terrible impact on their health. The chemicals cause many diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, or heart disease. At present, there isn’t any research or organization clearly explaining about the threat of chemical use in agriculture to the public. The threat not only has an impact on farmers but also on people living in neighboring area especially pregnant women. This is the reason why this research was done. The farmers will realize and understand disadvantages of chemical use; therefore, they and their families will have better health. If Thailand still wants to be considered as kitchen of the world, the farmers’ health is very critical.
