This week, we delve into the world of healthcare with this episode of "When I Grow Up": Working as an OSAS Nurse. We all sleep. But what if you snore during your sleep and keep stopping to breathe? Then you don't get into deep sleep—and you never wake up truly refreshed. People with sleep apnea sleep poorly and are tired, grumpy, or easily distracted during the day. An OSAS nurse helps patients sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed. Medical technology helps them with this. But when do you actually call sleep apnea? And how is it diagnosed? In this episode of "When I Grow Up," we delve into the medical world of the OSAS nurse. 13-year-old Rose is very interested in healthcare. Her mother works as a psychologist and her cousin is a pulmonologist. She herself thinks it would be great to become a nurse so she can help people. Her interest in sleep apnea might not come out of the blue: her father also has it, and Rose knows that he often snores and wakes up tired. Perhaps that's what inspired her to become an OSAS nurse. Together with presenter Jochem van Gelder, Rose starts working at Vivisol. They guide people from the initial sleep study through treatment and know exactly how to get someone out of bed refreshed. OSAS consultant Freya Ruijter immediately tests how much Jochem and Rose already know about sleep and sleep apnea. Because how much sleep do you actually need? And can poor sleep really make you gain weight? Rose then learns how a sleep study works. Such a study is necessary to determine whether someone has sleep apnea. With Jochem as her "patient," Freya shows her all the steps needed to properly perform a study. Freya then explains all the various treatment options: from a brace to a vibrating band and from medical devices to a mask that blows air into your nose and mouth using PAP therapy. Later that day, Jochem and Rose visit a pulmonologist at the hospital to review the results of a sleep study. How many breathing pauses constitute sleep apnea? How do you determine the most appropriate treatment? Rose is even given the important task of informing the patient about the diagnosis and the therapy. People with sleep apnea stop breathing several times a night. Such a breathing pause is called an apnea. Most people don't notice it, but the body repeatedly wakes up to breathe again.
