This week's episode of "When I Grow Up" features working as an orthopedic surgeon. Did you know that there are surgeons who specialize entirely in bones, joints, and muscles? An orthopedic surgeon ensures that you can walk, jump, or play sports again… even after a serious injury. But how do you become an orthopedic surgeon? How do you reconnect bones? And what exactly is involved in surgery? In this episode of "When I Grow Up," we delve into the fascinating world of orthopedics. Thirteen-year-old Tika enjoys watching hospital dramas and is certain: she wants to be a surgeon herself when she grows up. According to Tika, as a surgeon, you have to find solutions to medical problems so you can give people a better and happier life. Together with presenter Yldau de Boer, Tika gets to spend a day at Amphia Hospital in Breda. More than 5,000 people work there, including 17 orthopedic surgeons. Amphia is also a teaching hospital, where medical students are given the best possible guidance to become doctors. And young doctors are trained to become medical specialists. A young patient arrives at the emergency room after falling from a swing. Tika, along with the resident physician, performs a physical examination. Children are given extra attention, because sometimes there's more going on than they're letting on. X-rays reveal a significant fracture in the elbow. There's only one solution: surgery! Yldau and Tika are allowed to accompany the orthopedic surgeon to the operating room, where the team prepares for the procedure. The patient will have two pins inserted into his bone to repair the fracture. The surgical team discusses the procedure step by step and the possible scenarios, because there's always a plan A, B, and C. And then the moment arrives: Tika gets to practice on an artificial elbow and try to insert the pins into the bone. She not only has to consider how the bones will be reattached, but also the muscles and tendons that normally run along them. One wrong move can cause a lot of damage!
