Borderline intellectual functioning (BEE) is a term generally referring to individuals with an IQ of 70-85, but it is not a diagnostic term and does not qualify them for public support. While not below the IQ level required for intellectual disability (which falls below 70), these individuals are below average and often experience difficulties in daily life and the workplace. In recent years, there has been growing interest in this category. Approximately 15% of the population falls into this category, and its high incidence of co-occurrence with developmental disorders suggests it may become a significant keyword in future developmental disorder support. This time, we have invited Professor Junichi Furushō, a pediatrician and professor in the Faculty of Education and Human Sciences at Aoyama Gakuin University, who advocates for understanding and supporting individuals with borderline intellectual functioning, to deepen our understanding of developmental disorders and borderline intellectual functioning.
