This time, "Nature in the Garden" visits a garden in the East Styrian municipality of Floing. Karl Ploberger presents ten summer herbs that tolerate heat and drought. Herbalist Uschi Zezelitsch introduces the traditional houseleek (Sempervivum), and at the Tulln Garden Show, a herb spiral is being created as a diverse habitat. Garden Portrait The 4,500 m² garden of Sabine and Herbert Bauer in Floing was created in 2010. The once overgrown property was transformed into a Far Eastern-inspired natural garden with a pond, island, and wooden temple, striking stone walls, and a diverse array of plants ranging from native herbs to bamboo and sequoias. Among the water, stones, and herb beds, Sabine and Herbert Bauer find retreats that they experience as "energy recharge stations." Gardening and More – Tips from an Organic Gardener: Summer Herbs Karl Ploberger presents ideal summer herbs for sunny, dry locations. They need little water, thrive in well-drained soil, and reward pruning with vigorous growth. Uschi in Bloom: Houseleek Herbalist Uschi Zezelitsch focuses on houseleeks, one of the oldest "first-aid herbs." This robust plant flourishes in extremely dry locations. Uschi demonstrates simple applications, from using the plant sap for insect bites to making cooling masks for irritated skin. The Gardeners: Herb Spiral At the Tulln Garden Show, the gardeners are building a herb spiral based on permaculture principles. They explain site selection, stone placement, soil structure, and the different planting zones—from Mediterranean herbs at the top to nutrient-loving species at the bottom.
