IDA SOPHIA SCUDDER: La misionera MÉDICA en la India | BITE

Ida Sophia Scudder graduated from Northfield Seminary and with a medical degree from Cornell University. She traveled to India to visit her missionary parents, vowing never to become a missionary. But while there, she received her calling when three young women died in childbirth due to lack of medical care. For the next few years, she treated female patients in her father's bungalow; then, in 1902, she moved to Schell Hospital, built with money she raised herself. Scudder began training nurses. Her school grew to become the first graduate nursing school in India. In 1909, she began her famous roadside dispensaries, a ministry to patients in surrounding villages that eventually served thousands of people each week. Never satisfied, in 1918 she founded a college. Starting with seventeen girls, all taught by herself, they grew into a large complex, where thousands of doctors graduated. In 1923, again with the support of many denominations, he built a larger hospital in the center of Vellore. He fought bubonic plague, cholera, and leprosy. During his lifetime, he saw his medical center grow to become one of the largest in all of Asia; departments multiplied to include radiation oncology, thoracic surgery, nephrology, leprosy surgery and rehabilitation, microbiology, rural work, mental health, ophthalmology, and many others. He died in India in the midst of his missionary work.
