Indien: Die Flucht vor der Kinderehe | auslandsjournal

One in four brides in India is a minor: a not uncommon situation, but still illegal. Authorities rarely take action, and when they do, the husband ends up in prison, leaving the young wives unsure how to survive. Some brides are as young as 14 or even younger. ZDF correspondent Normen Odenthal attended the wedding of a young couple, both married by their parents. Especially in rural areas, the view that women are a burden that only diminishes once they are married still prevails. Marriage is a matter not settled by the bride and groom, but by the parents themselves. He also meets Jainty, a 17-year-old girl who refused to submit to her parents' wishes. She was able to find shelter in a children's home to shape her own future. The children and the team at the children's home are fighting against the deeply entrenched patriarchy and trying to persuade Indian society to rethink its approach. ----- Here on ZDFheute News, you'll find out what's happening in the world and what concerns us all: We provide insight into the world of news, explain the background, and address social debates.
