"The term 'hard-fought victory' generally applies to Schalke and this team," said Schalke coach Miro Muslic to the Sportschau microphone after the final whistle. His team conceded only one scoring opportunity in 100 minutes of play. "This statistic clearly speaks for our defensive structure," said Muslic. S04 captain Kenan Karaman also highlighted his team's defensive performance in a Sportschau interview. However, he dismissed the notion that Schalke, with their fifth consecutive victory, should be considered among the promotion favorites after the game: "To be honest, that's not even a topic of conversation in the locker room. We're simply enjoying ourselves right now, and we want to continue working hard." Early goals have been a Schalke specialty this season, and the visitors from Darmstadt experienced this firsthand in the top match. Although the Lilies managed to break free from the Royal Blues' pressing in the opening minutes, the ball still found its way into their own net in the ninth minute. Nikolai Katic intercepted a Darmstadt clearance at the halfway line and immediately launched a counter-attack. Soufiane El-Faouzi turned with lightning speed and spotted Sylla, who had found space between Patric Pfeiffer and Aleksandar Vukotic. From 13 meters out, Sylla fired the ball into the bottom right corner – Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen had little chance. The goal was one of many that Schalke have scored in the opening stages of the season. It underlines what Schalke have been doing so well this season: winning the ball, quickly transitioning, and making runs in behind. Schalke disrupted Darmstadt's build-up play early on and gave the visitors little opportunity to get into the game. Schalke waited for their next counter-attacking opportunity. They got it in the 28th minute. El-Faouzi won the ball from Luca Marseiler and, falling to the ground, laid it off perfectly from the sideline to Sylla. Sylla then sprinted past two defenders. This time, however, Schuhen prevailed: The goalkeeper waited patiently, narrowed the angle, and parried the low shot with his left foot. On the other end, things only got dangerous once. After a risky back pass from Katic, Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius just barely managed to get to the ball ahead of Bartosz Bialek. Overall, Darmstadt seemed to have few ideas on how to break down Schalke's strong defense, currently the second-best in German professional football behind Bayern Munich. Schalke appeared more composed overall. Shortly before halftime, the home side created another scoring opportunity: Sylla – this time providing the assist – crossed from the right into the penalty area, where Karaman slid in but put the ball over the bar. The second half picked up seamlessly where the first left off: Schalke dominance, Darmstadt a lack of ideas. El Faouzi repeatedly won the ball back and looked for through balls. With the amount of pressure the home side applied, it was surprising that the score was still only 1-0. Instead, the ball found the back of the Schalke net 14 minutes before the final whistle. Merveille Papela slipped a pass to Killian Corredor, who beat Karius from 15 meters. But the flag immediately went up: Corredor was clearly offside. Despite a heated 12 minutes of added time, Schalke held on to their lead. They underlined their impressive form this season. After their fifth consecutive victory, only Elversberg could still knock the Royal Blues off the top spot; SV Elversberg plays Bielefeld on Saturday.
