After about twelve minutes, the East Westphalians launched a quick counter-attack from their own half with a long ball: Mika Baur then crossed from the left, and Laurin Curda volleyed the ball home on the right side of the box – his shot nestled low into the Schalke net (13th minute). In a high-tempo encounter, Paderborn remained dangerous: Following a pass from Tjark Scheller, SCP striker Marino got a shot away in the Schalke penalty area, but Schalke goalkeeper Karius cleared for a corner (24th minute). But shortly afterwards, Paderborn had better luck: S04 keeper Karius initially made a strong save from a shot by Filip Bilbija, but the rebound fell to Marino – and the Paderborn player tapped it in to make it 2-0 (26th minute). After conceding the second goal, the visitors initially appeared stunned. But in the 35th minute, they suddenly pulled one back: Moussa Ndiaye crossed from the left side of the penalty area, and Dejan Ljubičić flicked the ball into the Paderborn net from about seven meters out with the tip of his outstretched right foot. And Schalke quickly responded: Sylla got a shot away from the six-yard box; SCP goalkeeper Seimen made the save, but the ball remained in the danger zone, and Adil Aouchiche fired it high into the net from about four meters out (40th minute). The second half developed into an exciting game, but with significantly less pace and fewer shots on goal. Both teams were reluctant to take big risks and largely cancelled each other out. But in the final stages, Schalke increased their attacking efforts: In the 81st minute, Ljubičić got a shot away in the penalty area, but it was blocked. Sylla's follow-up shot flew over the bar. But shortly afterward, the roughly 2,000 Schalke fans had reason to celebrate: Following Soufiane El-Faouzi's cross, the ball found its way to Ljubičić in the penalty area via Sylla – and the Austrian fired home from about seven meters out with the inside of his right foot into the left corner (83'). Paderborn increased the pressure once again, but to no avail – so the Ruhr club celebrated a 3-2 away victory.
