ABANDONED JJ NISSEN BAKERY Hooksett NH

The John J. Nissen Baking Company was founded in the early 1900s by a Danish immigrant named Jurgen Jepsen Nissen. It became a major regional bakery in Portland, Maine, known for breads and other baked goods. The large historic Nissen facility in Portland was built in 1924, later expanded, and eventually ceased production in 1999 after acquisition by larger corporate owners. That building has since been repurposed for offices. At its peak, the company made a wide range of bread and bakery products and had outlet stores and distribution points across New England. The Hooksett location (or outlet) appears to have closed due to broader corporate shifts and consolidation of bakery outlet operations by companies like Freihofer’s / Bimbo Bakeries USA, which phased out many such retail sites in the Northeast. After the bakery/outlet shut down, the building was neither re-tenanted quickly nor redeveloped for many years — which is why residents often refer to it as abandoned or long-empty. In local planning documents, it’s referenced as existing but unoccupied — with other Hooksett commercial properties in the area being actively developed or repurposed while this one stayed vacant.
