The 'Cheap' British Carrier Built On A Truck Chassis That Is Still Fighting In Ukraine Today

In 1976 a factory yard in Coventry produced a vehicle officers refused to take seriously — a tall, flat-sided steel box welded onto the chassis of a Bedford four-tonne truck. Truck wheels. Truck engine. No turret, no cannon, no sloped armour, no mine-protected hull. They called it a lorry. That was the entire design. The Alvis Saxon was the cheapest armoured vehicle the British Army ever bought. It patrolled Belfast and the border roads of South Armagh through the worst years of the Troubles. It ran the reinforcement exercises of the British Army of the Rhine every year of the 1980s. It carried the wounded in Saudi Arabia in 1991. It drove the mountain roads of Bosnia painted UN white, past three armies who could have killed it at any moment. Britain retired it as obsolete in 2008 and sold it at auction. In 2022, seventy-five were driven east into a war against the largest armoured force in Europe. They are still running today, with improvised drone cages welded over their roofs. Every criticism was accurate. Too tall. Too thin. Too crude. None of it mattered — because the question was never whether the Saxon was a good armoured vehicle. It was whether a soldier who would otherwise have travelled in an unprotected truck arrived alive.
