Twice Exceptional, Many Times Failed
Schools are tasked with the nearly impossible mandate of transmitting a standardized curriculum to a wide variety of students. Schools often label students “gifted” or “learning disabled” if they cannot fit in academically with the majority of students who make up the middle of the proverbial bell curve. Twice Exceptional (2e) students are typically the less served students because they are simultaneously considered gifted and learning disabled. Coupled with their small numbers, schools are ill-equipped to expend the required resources and make the necessary accommodations for 2e students to thrive in a standardized setting. Antonio Buehler will highlight actionable steps that parents can take to ensure that their 2e children will no longer be failed by their school. This session is most appropriate for public or private schooled 2e young people ages 10 and up, and their guardians. Antonio F. Buehler began his career as an Airborne Ranger qualified Engineer Officer in the US Army where he served tours in Kosovo and Iraq. He also worked on Wall Street as an investment banker, ran his own private equity fund, and taught middle school and high school. Outside of work Buehler founded the Peaceful Streets Project, served on the board of a child bereavement non-profit, volunteered at an orphanage in Bulgaria, coached high school football in Germany, and has personally mentored and tutored dozens of children. Buehler graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Systems Engineering, from Stanford University with an MBA, and from Harvard University with a Master of Education. He is the founder of Abrome.
