In the Maya culture, the closest thing to the Christian hell that we all know is called Xibalbá, the Maya underworld, the kingdom from beyond, the kingdom of the dead. This underground world is described in the Popol Vuh, the 'book of the council' or 'community book' of the Maya. In the Popol Vuh the cosmogony, mythology, legends and stories of the Quiché Maya people are compiled. The Maya underworld beyond just representing the concept of eternal suffering and punishment for people who did evil on earth, represented death and disease as part of existence and is the place where not only are presents the souls of human beings, but also of animals, plants, stars and everything that inhabits the face of the earth. The Maya underworld is described as a physical kingdom made up of nine levels and is hidden beneath the surface of the earth. It is said that it can be accessed through different entries. In the 16th century, one of these entrances was traditionally located in a cave near the town of Alta Verapaz, near Cobán, Guatemala. Other entrances could be through the cenotes, which are natural water wells that communicate an extensive and intricate labyrinth of underground rivers, a world of caves and water wrapped in a halo of mysticism under our feet, for the Maya were the sacred portals to Xibalbá. The Mayan underworld was ruled by the twelve lords of death, the Lords of Xibalbá. The main regents and supreme judges were Hun-Camé (One-Death) and Vucum-Camé (Seven-Death), the other 10 lords worked in pairs and each pair was in charge of a specific type of human misfortune: sufferings, indigence , diseases, hunger, fear, pain and death. According to Popol Vuh, the underworld was a true civilization with various structures that included a council for the Lords, houses, a ball court, gardens and sacred buildings describing a large city under water. Visitors had to overcome major obstacles, challenges and dangerous traps before arriving. Once there, the Lords would put them to the test in one of six deadly houses, where either they passed the test or were sentenced to death. In one of the passages of the Popol Vuh the mythical confrontation between the Lords of Xibalbá is narrated against the twins Hun Hunahpú and Vacub Hunahpú, who had great gifts and abilities in the ball game. One day they went to play on the road to Xibalbá, unfortunately the thunderous noise unleashed the wrath of the Lords of Xibalbá, Hun-Camé and Vucub-Camé. What are they doing on earth? Who are the ones that make her tremble and make so much noise? Let them call you! Let them come to play ball here, where we will beat them! We are no longer respected by them, they are no longer considerate or afraid of our category, and they even start fighting over our heads, said all of Xibalba. Enraged, they summoned the council of all the Lords of Xibalba and discussed how they should torment and punish the twins. Having made a decision, the Lords of Xibalbá sent their messengers to invite Hun Hunahpú and Vacub Hunahpú to Xibalbá. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Minima Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Night of the Owl Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...
