Two Mothers, One River, A Lifetime of Love

Today, the river gave us much more than cool water on a hot desert day. Kay and I spent the day beside the beautiful waters of Andreas Canyon, escaping the summer heat and enjoying one of life’s simplest pleasures: time together. As we sat by the river sharing our picnic, we found ourselves talking about our childhoods and the remarkable women who raised us. Although our mothers grew up on different continents, their stories seemed so similar. Both taught us to love nature, to appreciate simple moments, and to find happiness in things that cost nothing at all. We remembered throwing stones into rivers, making little paper boats, decorating them with leaves and pieces of wood, and cheering as they floated downstream before eventually sinking under their precious cargo. We laughed as we realized that our mothers had probably done those very same things when they were children. The day became a celebration of their wisdom, their love, and the values they passed on to us. Their lessons are still alive every time we stop to admire a tree, listen to running water, share food with friends, or simply enjoy each other’s company. Today reminded us that some of life’s greatest treasures are not found in possessions or accomplishments, but in memories, gratitude, and the love that continues flowing through generations—just like the river itself.
