Salem Express: A Wreck in Memory | Short Documentary

Thousands of divers visit this wreck every year — but few know the full story behind it. This short documentary narrates the tragedy of the Salem Express. On the night of December 16, 1991, the passenger ferry Salem Express struck a reef near Safaga, Egypt, while returning from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, carrying pilgrims from the Hajj. The ship sank in only a few minutes. Official reports estimate that around 470 people lost their lives, although many believe the real number may have been significantly higher due to unregistered passengers on board. The estimate goes as high as 1,600 lives claimed. Today, the wreck rests in the Red Sea at a depth of approximately 10–30 meters, making it accessible to recreational divers. Over time, it has become one of the most well-known wreck dives in the region. However, the Salem Express is more than just a dive site. This short documentary by XR Explorers tells the story behind the wreck — not as a place of adventure, but as a place marked by tragedy, memory, and the lives lost that night. It also raises an important question for divers: how should we approach dive sites connected to real human loss? __________________________________________________________________________ About XR Explorers XR Explorers is a project focused on technical & cave diving, underwater exploration, cinematography, and storytelling from beneath the surface.
