St Elizabeth of Portugal — The Queen Who Stopped

St. Elizabeth of Portugal was a queen, yet her greatest glory was not her crown, but her humility, prayer, and charity. From childhood, she was known for her piety, her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her tender care for the poor. As Queen of Portugal, she did not seek luxury or worldly honor. She rose early for prayer, attended Holy Mass, cared for the sick, helped the poor, and became a true mother to those in need. Her life was also marked by suffering. She endured false accusations, family conflict, and the threat of war among those closest to her. Yet she remained faithful to her mission: to bring peace where others were preparing for battle. She is remembered for the famous miracle of the roses, for her mercy toward the poor, for laying aside her royal garments and putting on the habit of Saint Clare, and for her final mission of reconciliation at the end of her life. St. Elizabeth of Portugal, patroness of peace, reconciliation, widows, the poor, the sick, and families wounded by conflict — pray for us. Material prepared based on the book Lives of the Saints for Every Day of the Year by Fr. Prokop the Capuchin, 1882 edition.
