Do children know when something is fantasy and not real, or do they take every situation seriously? When we play, we immerse ourselves in another world full of imagination. In this fantasy world, colorful building blocks are transformed into tools or even food. During pretend play, children enter a fictional world for the first time with the help of their imagination. But can children really distinguish between reality and fantasy? Do children understand when they play, or are they simply imitating what adults show them? To find out, we confronted children in pretend play with two situations that were only slightly different from each other and paid close attention to their reactions.
