Many of them took place on the borders between powers. A base was attacked, and reinforcements rushed to its aid and launched a counterattack. While this wasn't always the case, it seems that battles surrounding castles often unfolded in this way. However, there was a Sengoku daimyo who carried out an extraordinary strategy: traveling across enemy territory for a month, attacking everywhere, before returning home. That man was the famous Takeda Shingen of Kai (who will be referred to as Shingen throughout this video). One day, Shingen suddenly invaded the territory of the Hojo clan, which had vast influence in the Kanto region. He advanced his army while attacking Hojo castles throughout the country, and eventually reached Odawara Castle, the Hojo clan's base. He then set fire to the castle town of Odawara, causing extensive devastation throughout the Hojo territory. Naturally, the Hojo clan was not left standing by and devised a strategy to prevent the Takeda army from returning home, but Shingen quickly repelled the Hojo forces lying in wait and successfully retreated to his territory of Kai. The distance traveled from the start was approximately 500 kilometers. It was a strange march, as they did not take any castles along the way and did not gain any territory on either side, but the Takeda army's reckless fighting style surprised the Hojo clan and gave Shingen the advantage in subsequent battles. Having had their territory overrun and suffered a terrible defeat, the Hojo army, particularly Ujikuni of Hachigata Castle and Ujiteru of Takiyama Castle, decided they could not let the Takeda army return like this and advanced into Sagami. They ambushed the Takeda army on their return route and then requested reinforcements from Odawara Castle to attack them from both sides. Hojo Ujiteru and his men set up camp at Mimasu Pass. There are various theories about how the Battle of Mimasu Pass unfolded, and in fact not much is known. The Hojo army's plan was to position themselves on the high ground at Mimasu Pass, where the Takeda army was heading, and intercept them from an advantageous position. Eventually, a large army led by Hojo Ujimasa would arrive from Odawara and attack the Takeda army from behind, encircling them and wiping them out. Meanwhile, the Takeda army, led by Shingen, had to somehow evade the enemy's attacks from the high ground and break through Mimasu Pass before the reinforcements from Odawara arrived. They also had to prepare for attacks from Tsukui Castle, which was owned by the Hojo clan and located on the north side of the pass. In this two-part article, we will introduce the "Kanto Transverse Strategy," in which Takeda Shingen ran through the territory of the Hojo clan, and the mountain battle that took place at the end of it, the "Battle of Mimasu Pass."
