Life as a Salaryman in Osaka

In my last video, I talked about the first time I came to Japan. This time, I want to talk about what came next — working and living in Osaka, and teaching Japanese salarymen after long days at the office. Through them, I came to understand just how demanding salaryman life was. Long hours, expected overtime, and frequent after‑work drinking with colleagues and customers were simply part of daily life. We talked, drank, and spent time together outside the classroom, and I learned far more about Japan from those evenings than I ever could from a textbook. Drinking was common, but rules were followed — no driving, no riding motorbikes, and today even bicycles are off‑limits if you’ve been drinking. These experiences shaped how I understood Japanese work culture, responsibility, and endurance. I had a great time with my students, both in class and outside of it, and those years left a deep impression on me. In the next video, I’ll talk about learning Japanese in Osaka — inside classrooms and, more importantly, in everyday life.
