Chess is not easy and there are so many areas that ask for our attention and focus including chess openings, chess middlegames, chess endgames, chess tactics, chess puzzles, chess theory, chess strategy, chess principles, chess tricks, chess traps, chess principles, and so much more! Where do we start? Well in today's video I talk about the truth about improving at chess nobody's talking about. Many do super difficult puzzles, look for brilliant moves, and think they're improving when they get one! Well, sure this is fun. But chess is not about what you CAN get right, but what about what you CANNOT get wrong. I talk about how in chess we need to drill the basics and fundamentals until we have them COMPLETELY MASTERED! You want to drill easy chess puzzles, easy chess tactics, easy chess patterns, easy chess strategy, easy chess endgames, and easy chess ideas until you don't even need to think about them twice. We don't want to barely win king and queen vs king, but win it without even thinking! We want to stop blundering pieces, hanging pieces, and dropping mate in 1s. Chess is a hard game but it gets a WHOLE LOT EASIER when we master the basics! Let me know where you are at in your chess journey you are, where you plan to go, and how you think you'll get there. It's worth adding that many players will study/play chess openings and will constantly thinking the opening is the issue. Is this the case sometimes? The Caro-Kann (or at least Caro-Kann lines I was doing) didn't match my style at all and honestly still don't. However later on I found lines like the Botvinnik-Carls Defense (instead of 3. ...Bf5) and Tartakower Defense (instead of 3. ...Bf5). I guess you can just say I don't like ...Bf5, but that really did cause me issues! I ended up switching over the Sicilian Najdorf, a favorite of Garry Kasparov and I did very well with it. However, I was already at a level where I wasn't dropping pieces! It was extremely rare for me to drop a piece, miss a hanging piece, miss a mate in 1, etc. Once you hit a certain level in chess, openings start mattering A LOT. However, up until a certain point - you really need to focus on the basics of chess endgames, chess tactics, and chess patterns. What is that level? It's hard to put an ELO on it. However I would simply ask the question, how often do you blunder? How often do you hang a piece? If this is happening every game, I recommend relaxing on the chess opening study and doing what is shared in this video on the the truth of improving at chess that nobody's talking about. If you like studying openings, go for it! In fact most of my channel is about chess opening theory and chess opening strategy! I'm only speaking of sheer chess improvement here.
