We all want to win. At least I do. I'm not saying we shouldn't want to win - or even try to. However, I'm speaking of the process we take in getting there. Many players are worried about getting a chess.com ‪@chess‬ brilliancy, or finding the forcing line, winning move, etc. Sometimes there is no win there, even in a winning position! Most of my chess games, I don't know how I'll win. I don't know exactly how the game will turn out. I don't even know what will take place in the next 10 moves! However, what I do (try to) know is how to improve my position. If you improve your position enough, eventually a tactic or checkmate opportunity will form. I talked about a few moments where we should try to stray away from looking for the winning move, winning checkmate, or winning variation. 1. Stop trying to win chess gams WHEN you're up material. So many chess players go up a pawn/piece and then start sacrificing it right back! Most of the time, being up a single pawn means you're winning. However, you need to play patient, trade, and look for a winning endgame. If you are up material, don't play risky - you are up. You have the leverage. It is up to your opponent to try to make the game complicated and tactical and wild. 2. Stop trying to win chess games WHEN there's nothing there. It's common for chess players to overpush when going up against a lower rated player. Against a higher ELO chess player? We are good with a draw! However with a lower ELO we often feel like a draw is failure. However, sometimes a win simply isn't there. Often in chess, both sides can hold a draw - without a winning move/tactic available to either side. Try to be honest with yourself when a win isn't there. If you can play non-risky chess and keep playing - go for it! However, don't weaken your position just because you don't want to draw. 3. Stop trying to win chess games WHEN they can't do anything. You DON'T need to be in a rush if your opponent is stuck! This is more common in certain openings, such as the Hippopotamus Defense. However, out of any chess opening - there can be moments where one side is simply stuck. They may be down material, they may be stuck defending, or they may simply have nowhere to go. Do you want to win? Of course. However, you don't need to see a win. You don't need to see a tactic. You need to see how to improve your position. And in improving your position through good chess strategy and positional chess, it doesn't need to be anything heroic. Most chess games I play aren't Mikhail Tal like - it's fun when it happens. However, most of chess is not blundering and playing solid moves. Go win chess games, but don't be worried about controlling the outcome at move 3! Focus on what you can actually control. Limit weaknesses on your side of the board, prioritizing development and king safety - and of course adding pressure to your opponent's structure and weak points.
