Uday Shankar (1900–1977) was an Indian dancer and choreographer, widely regarded as the pioneer of modern dance in India. He is best known for blending Indian classical dance forms with Western ballet and contemporary dance, creating a unique fusion style that gained international recognition. Shankar’s influence on Indian dance is immense, and his work laid the foundation for modern Indian contemporary dance. His younger brother, Ravi Shankar, became a world-famous sitar maestro, further strengthening the family’s impact on Indian performing arts.
