Un nouveau regard sur l’Histoire de l’esclavage au Maghreb
In this episode, M'hamed Oualdi, a historian of the Maghreb, recounts his discovery, in the Tunisian National Archives, of a letter from a slave of Greek origin to his master, written in Arabic in 1832 in Tunis. He describes how this document led him to reconsider his understanding and practice of history, turning in particular to non-European sources written in Arabic. His work sheds light on a different history of slavery, through the lens of marginalized and personal experiences. — M'hamed Oualdi is a professor at the Sciences Po Center for History. He currently directs the European Research Council (ERC) project SLAVEVOICES, which focuses on the disappearance of slavery in the Mediterranean from the mid-18th century to the 1930s. His publications include: Slavery in the Muslim World: From the First Slave Trades to Trauma (Amsterdam, 2024) and *A Slave Between Two Empires*. A Trans-Imperial History of the Maghreb (Seuil, 2023), and Slaves and Masters: The Mamluks of the Beys of Tunis from the 17th Century to the 1880s (Éditions de la Sorbonne, 2011). —— "In the Historians' Workshop" is a podcast from the Sciences Po History Center, hosted by Aurélie Luneau and produced by Nils Bertinelli. 🎧 Podcast the episode: https://smartlink.ausha.co/dans-l-ate...
