La lutte contre la tuberculose en Turquie : un “miracle” sanitaire ?
How did Turkey construct its image as a health “miracle” in the fight against tuberculosis? In this episode, Léa Delmaire, a historian specializing in the history of health in Turkey, examines the political and social issues surrounding tuberculosis after World War II. She analyzes how Turkey positioned itself as a modern country, capable of combating this disease, then considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Faced with limited access to archives in Turkey, Léa Delmaire explains how she used photographs from the World Health Organization (WHO) that notably featured nurse investigators, symbols of the fight against tuberculosis and of the Turkish Republic's ambitions for modernization. — Léa Delmaire defended her doctoral thesis at Sciences Po in 2024, entitled “‘The Great Turkish Miracle’: Problematization and Policies of Tuberculosis in Turkey (1945-1975),” which was awarded the Social Security History Committee's Doctoral Thesis Prize. She has since been working at the Pasteur Institute on a research project on Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever: “Ticks and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever on the fringes of Europe: A historical approach to the production of knowledge on emerging diseases, health surveillance, and control measures in Turkey.” “Dans l’atelier des historiens” (In the Historians' Workshop) is a podcast from the Sciences Po History Center, hosted by Aurélie Luneau and produced by Nils Bertinelli. 🎧 Podcast the episode: https://smartlink.ausha.co/dans-l-ate...
