But you can only ever buy a piece of a big city. A town this size, you can buy whole, in the original box, and nicely wrapped in tissue paper." Bay City is Santa Monica, an independent borough of LA, where Chandler lived when he wrote the story "Bay City Blues." For him, Bay City was a symbol of hypocrisy. He hated the pretense of righteousness in a place that practically belonged to a few rich people. "You can buy the law in this town." The Austrian case, which leads private investigator John Dalmas to Bay City, initially seems like the usual business. The wife of medical doctor Leland Austrian has been found dead in her garage. Suicide, says the police. However, there are a few clues that don't fit the picture. But every time John Dalmas thinks he has a lead, he stumbles upon a dead body. And then there's Police Sergeant de Spain, a tough guy who's set his sights on becoming head of the homicide division. Of course, everything turns out quite differently...
