Instead, it is a studio cast recording featuring radio and television singers performing the hit songs from the show. This was a very common practice in the 1950s, allowing companies to sell inexpensive versions of Broadway hits to department stores and discount retailers. The Musical My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway in 1956 and became one of the most successful musicals ever written. It is based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.
