Forgotten Classical Recital LP | Peter Olsen, Baritone | Edelgard Hainke Pianist Private Pressing LP

Not every rare record was released by a major label. Some of the most fascinating albums are privately produced recital recordings that were pressed in very small quantities and sold at concerts or shared among family, friends, and supporters. Today on the Basin Street Collection, we're taking a closer look at this unusual LP featuring Peter Olsen, Baritone, accompanied by Edelgard Hainke on piano. Although very little information survives about Peter Olsen himself, this album serves as a wonderful snapshot of a dedicated classical vocalist performing some of the finest art songs in the German, English, Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish traditions. Research suggests this was a private pressing, likely produced in a relatively small run rather than released by a commercial record label. These recordings were often financed by the performer, making it entirely possible that Peter Olsen commissioned and paid for the recording sessions and the production of the album as part of promoting his recital career. While no documentation confirming the financial arrangements has been found, that was the common practice for independent recital LPs of this era. One name that does appear elsewhere is Edelgard Hainke, the accomplished pianist accompanying Olsen. She later became known as a respected vocal coach and accompanist in Utah, working with numerous singers and helping train future musicians. Her participation lends additional historical interest to this recording and suggests it may have originated within Utah's classical music community.
