I hiked the Kuju Mountains in Kyushu, Japan, just a short flight from Korea. The volcanic terrain, sweeping mountain range, and open ridgelines felt very different from most mountains in Korea. For much of the hike, the views remained wide and unobstructed. 📌 Kuju Mountains: Two-Day Hiking and Camping Information 🚗 Getting There It takes approximately two hours to drive from Fukuoka Airport to Chojabaru. A small rental car cost around KRW 40,000 per day, and fuel was approximately KRW 1,600 per litre during this trip. Parking at Chojabaru was free and relatively spacious. Please check current prices, road conditions, and transport information before travelling. ⛺ Bogatsuru Campsite Free / No reservation required / Toilets and water facilities available Campfires are prohibited, but camping stoves are permitted. There is very little light pollution, so on a clear, moonless night, Bogatsuru is a beautiful place to see the stars and Milky Way. ♨️ Hokkein Onsen Sanso The mountain lodge is approximately a 15-minute walk from Bogatsuru. Hot-spring bathing, accommodation, and meals are available. I recommend bringing your own towel. 🥾 Day 2. Hiking Route Bogatsuru → Hokkein Onsen Sanso → Mount Shirakuchi → Mount Nakadake → Tengugajo → Miike → Mount Kuju → Hokkein Onsen Sanso → Bogatsuru → Chojabaru This is a loop route through the Kuju Mountains rather than an out-and-back hike. Because I stopped frequently to film, the mountain section took me around 11 hours. Without filming, I would estimate approximately seven to eight hours. I left my tent at Bogatsuru and hiked with a lighter pack. After returning, I packed up camp and walked back to Chojabaru. 🏔 For a Day Hike to Mount Kuju and Nakadake Starting from Makinoto Pass is much more efficient than starting from Chojabaru. The approach to the main summits is shorter, making it a more manageable option for a single-day hike. It is a route I would gladly recommend to anyone visiting the Kuju Mountains. 🌸 Miyama Kirishima Azalea Season I visited on May 18 and 19. Some flowers had begun to bloom around Bogatsuru, but it was still too early around the higher summits. The most reliable period is generally from late May into early June, although flowering dates vary each year. Please check the latest local bloom reports before your visit. 🗺 Navigation and Trail Conditions There are relatively few stairs or wooden boardwalks, and much of the trail follows the natural terrain. I did not encounter any especially dangerous sections, but trail signs are fairly limited and many do not display distances. I recommend checking an offline map or GPS regularly while hiking. When the route is unclear, look for the yellow markings painted on the rocks. After the hike, I visited Tsuetate Onsen, a small hot-spring town in Kumamoto.
