We don't treat our Old House like a New House...

Old houses were never designed to be sealed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's a new way to support our work - visit https://ko-fi.com/thecottagers to buy us a box of screws! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For most of their lives, traditional buildings managed moisture, heat and ventilation through breathability — lime, timber, stone, airflow — a whole system working gently together. But over the past few decades, a very different philosophy has taken hold: one built on membranes, plastics, foams and the promise that by sealing buildings we can engineer our way to efficiency. Sometimes that works beautifully — in modern buildings designed for it. But what happens when that same thinking is applied blindly to solid-wall, pre-1920 housing? In this video we explore the growing concern that inappropriate retrofit — cement renders, impermeable insulation systems, sealed windows without regard for fabric — may be putting millions of traditional buildings at risk of trapped moisture, hidden decay, and long-term structural harm. This isn’t an anti-insulation video. And it isn’t anti-regulation either. In fact, the regulations themselves increasingly recognise the need for heritage sensitivity, ventilation, and material compatibility. The real gap often lies elsewhere — in training, in industry momentum, and in a one-size-fits-all retrofit culture that hasn’t fully caught up with the physics of old buildings. So we’re asking a simple question: What does energy efficiency look like when it works with traditional fabric rather than against it? We’ll talk about: • Breathability and why it matters • The risks of impermeable materials in solid walls • Windows, ventilation, and the “sealed box” paradox • How regulations actually treat historic buildings • Why “doing less, but better” is sometimes the safer path And yes — we’ll also show the work we’re doing here at the cottage as we try, imperfectly, to learn a more sympathetic way of caring for an old building. Some will say we’re doing it wrong. And maybe, sometimes, we will be. But we’re trying to work with our building’s original design — not against it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We're Joe and Lydia, and we quit our day jobs to restore our 200-year-old cottage in Wales, and we want to show you as much entertaining and educational content as we can produce. The restoration can sometimes be daunting. A bit like renovating a cottage in Ireland, Wales can be wet and cold and thoroughly rewarding in its own charming way!
