Joshua, Jericho, Rahab and the Spies (The Token)

[Intro] [Verse 1] Moses laid his mantle down upon the mountain's crest Jehovah called to Joshua and put him to the test Forty years of wandering had burned the doubt away Now the children of the covenant would march to see the day They came upon the Jordan as the springtime waters swelled But God can stop a raging river by His word it's held The waters rose in Adam and the riverbed ran dry And all of Israel crossed on faith beneath the open sky [Pre-Chorus] God spoke to Joshua "As I was with Moses, I will be with you Be strong and very courageous there is nothing I won't see you through" [Chorus] The walls of Jericho stood high and strong and wide But no wall ever built by man can stop the Lord inside The God of Abraham and Isaac He is faithful to His word When you call upon His mercy, let the battle cry be heard He is Lord of all the nations, He is Lord of every soul Who returns unto His covenant and trusts in His control [Verse 2] Two spies crept into Jericho beneath the cover of night The gates were swinging shut when one woman brought them light Rahab was her name and yes the world had marked her fall But she'd heard of great Jehovah and she answered to His call She hid them in the flax stalks on the rooftop in the air Then she said, "I know your God is God beyond compare Of heaven and of earth alike His power fills this land The hearts of all my people melt like water at His hand" [Pre-Chorus] "So swear to me by mercy spare my people, spare my kin" The spies said "Life for life, we swear by God we'll bring you in" [Chorus] The walls of Jericho stood high and strong and wide But no wall ever built by man can stop the Lord inside The God of Abraham and Isaac He is faithful to His word When you call upon His mercy, let the battle cry be heard He is Lord of all the nations, He is Lord of every soul Who returns unto His covenant and trusts in His control [Verse 3] "When we come into this city, tie the token to the sill Bind this scarlet thread here in your window and be still Bring your father, mother, brothers all your household through your door For the scarlet is your safety trust the oath we swore" She lowered them by rope into the dark below the wall Whispered "Hide three days among the hills then answer back the call" Then she bound the scarlet token to the window where she stayed And she waited on the mercy of the promise that was made [Pre-Chorus] The spies returned to Joshua and said, "The land is in our hand For every soul in Canaan fears the power where we stand" [Bridge] March around the city once a day for six full days Seven priests with seven trumpets fill the air with solemn praise Not a word not a war cry just obedience on the ground Let the Lord God fight this battle let the silence be the sound On the seventh day they rose and circled round it seven times Seven priests, seven trumpets blowing heaven-shaking signs Then Joshua cried "NOW SHOUT! for God has given us the land!" And the walls of mighty Jericho came flat at God's command But one scarlet thread still hung there glowing crimson on the wall… [Verse 4] Joshua sent the two men in "Go bring Rahab and her own" Every soul within her household not one left alone She had bet her life on mercy she had chosen to believe And the God of grace and glory never fails those who receive He brought her into Israel and her name was never stained For God redeems the broken ones and counts their faith as gained In the very line of David in the bloodline of our King Stands Rahab's scarlet courage as an everlasting thing [Outro] What God did once for Rahab He is willing still to do His mercy knows no limit and His grace is reaching out for you
