The Discrepancy between Faith and Practice (Washington). 1. Read 1 Corinthians 5:1 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What does the word "faithful" refer to? (reality) b. What concept does the word "pagan" convey? (See Matthew 10:5, 6 – three categories: Israel, Samaritans, and Gentiles; the members of the church in Corinth are part of Israel, they are no longer Gentiles!) c. Why is it forbidden to have one's father's wife? (See Lev. 18:8; Deut. 22:30; 27:20 – a Torah prohibition!) 2. Do you identify with Israel? II. How to defuse scandals (PN). 1. Read 1 Cor. 5:2-13 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What was the church's reaction to the sin? (v. 2 – "they became proud"; "arrogant" (PR); "you are presumptuous" (RBO)) b. What is the danger of indulging in open sin in the church? (v. 6 – influence on everyone, normalization, spread of sin) c. What actions should be taken (v. 2 - "weep," "was taken from among you"; v. 5 - "deliver him to Satan for the destruction of the flesh"; v. 9 - "have no companionship"; v. 11 - "do not eat together"; v. 13 - "purge from among you the wicked man") d. To what kind of sinners should these measures be applied? (v. 11 - "though he is called a brother, he remains a fornicator...") e. What realities of the spiritual world does the phrase "deliver him to Satan" (v. 5) describe? (See Acts 26:17, 18 - "from the power of Satan to God" - there are 2 kingdoms; expulsion from the church is a return to Satan's kingdom) e. What does the phrase "do not eat together" mean in light of the context? (See vv. 6-8 - unleavened bread) g. What is quoted in v. 13? (Deut. 13:5; 17:7, 12; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21, 24; 24:7 – Torah; the Septuagint has an identical phrase!) h. What principle follows from the previous question? (That for which the death penalty was prescribed by the Torah requires expulsion from the church.) i. What is the purpose of expulsion from the church? (v. 5 – salvation! See 2 Cor. 2:6-9; 7:6-11 – the sinner forsook sin and reformed.) 2. What new information have you learned from this section? III. Protecting Church Integrity (VT). 1. Read 1 Cor. 6:1-8 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What caused lawsuits between church members? (v. 8 – "you [yourselves] wrong and take away.") b. What alternatives does Paul offer? (v. 1 – "to plead... before the saints"; v. 7 – "to remain wronged... to suffer hardship") c. What function should the church fulfill? (v. 2 – "to judge minor matters"; v. 3 – "to judge... the affairs of this life"; v. 5 – "to judge between brothers") d. When will the saints judge the world (v. 2)? (Rev. 20:4 – 1,000 years) d. Which angels are mentioned (v. 3)? (Jude 5:6 – "those who did not keep their first estate") 2. Answer question 5 in the context of your congregation! IV. The Antidote to Sexual Promiscuity (SP). 1. Read 1 Cor. 6:9-11 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What does the word "unrighteous" mean (v. 9)? (in the original, ἄδικος (ádikos) – “wicked” (v. 1); “vicious” (RBO)) b. What does “sodomy” mean (v. 9)? (in the original, ἀρσενοκοίτης (arsenokóiteś) – “a man who has sexual relations with a person of the same sex” (BDAG Lexicon)) c. What does “malakiai” mean (v. 9)? (“masturbators” (Cassian)) d. What is the good news of this passage? (v. 11 – “such were”) 2. Read 1 Cor. 6:12-20 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. Whose words are these – “all things are lawful for me” (v. 12)? (Context: vv. 9-11 – not all! See 7:1 – “but about what you wrote to me”) b. What are our bodies?
