Maximum wind speeds reaching 190 km/h in south Ottawa were caused by downburst. The intense wind and thunderstorm known as a derecho killed 10 people and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands more. The storm, which Environment Canada has said involved a derecho — a rare widespread windstorm associated with a line of thunderstorms — uprooted trees, damaged buildings, toppled power lines and left thousands in the dark for hours in the city, including some for several days.
