Maximum wind speeds reaching 190 km/h in south Ottawa were caused by downburst. The intense wind and thunderstorm known as a derecho killed 10 people and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands more. The storm, which Environment Canada has said involved a derecho — a rare widespread windstorm associated with a line of thunderstorms — uprooted trees, damaged buildings, toppled power lines and left thousands in the dark for hours in the city, including some for several days. Tyson Peers sits in his 'Viking house' in woods near his home in Hawkesbury, Ont. Peers, his younger brother and a friend took shelter inside the rough structure when a powerful storm ripped through the area on May 21.
