Grizzly Bear Sighting at Lincoln Lake: Backpacking Glacier National Park

On our third day hiking in Glacier National Park, our second night out in the backcountry, we headed to Lincoln Lake and got a wild surprise with a grizzly bear sighting. This trip, part of my wife’s first backpacking adventure, followed our Otokomi Lake hike—check it out here: Part 1 -    • Backpacking Glacier National Park, Montana...   Part 2 -    • Backpacking Montana - Day 2 Otokomi Lake, ...   After a break in a Whitefish cabin, we took on the 12-mile Cut Bank trail, passing through meadows with wildflowers and pine groves to reach Lincoln Lake’s bright turquoise water at 6,500 feet. We set up camp by the shore and ate a hearty pasta dinner. A quick swim in the cold lake woke us up, the water sharp as we floated with mountains overhead. Sitting on rocks warmed by the sun, we popped open some light beers, their fizz hitting the spot as the lake reflected the sky’s colors. Then, about 250 yards across the water, we spotted three grizzly bears—a mom and her two cubs—eating berries in the late afternoon light. It spooked us at first, but watching them move so naturally, just doing their thing, was incredible, like seeing nature up close. They wandered off into the trees before we turned in, leaving us amazed. As the day wound down, we hung out by the lake, taking it all in before crawling into our tent for the night, struck by Glacier’s wild energy.
