Delayed grief explained: what causes it and how to cope
Delayed grief is one of the most misunderstood—and quietly painful—forms of grief. In this episode of Life With Grief, I’m unpacking what delayed grief really is, why it happens, and how it can surface long after a loss you thought you had already “handled.” So many grievers experience delayed grief without realizing that’s what they’re going through. You might feel blindsided by emotions months or even years after a loss, wondering why your grief is showing up now. In this episode, I share both professional insight and personal experience to help normalize this very real grief response. We chat about: ✨ What delayed grief is and why it’s often overlooked ✨ Signs and symptoms of delayed grief (emotionally and physically) ✨ Why grief can resurface months or years after loss ✨ The role of trauma, suppression, and societal expectations in delayed grief We explore common causes of delayed grief, including unresolved trauma, suppressed emotions, denial, emotional survival mode, and cultural or societal pressures that encourage us to “stay strong” or move on too quickly. I also talk about how delayed grief can show up in the body and nervous system—through symptoms like headaches, insomnia, emotional numbness, irritability, anxiety, or sudden emotional outbursts. Most importantly, this episode offers gentle, tangible coping strategies to help you navigate delayed grief with patience, self-compassion, and understanding—without judgment or timelines. If your grief feels confusing, resurfaced, or out of sync with what you think it should look like, this conversation is for you. ______ ☕️ Support the podcast: https://buymeacoffee.com/lifewithgrie...
