La Cattedrale di UDINE

At the behest of the patriarch Bertoldo of Andechs-Merania, in 1236 the current cathedral began to be built but the disastrous earthquake of 1348 caused serious damage to the cathedral so that several years passed before starting the reconstruction. From known documents it appears that only in 1368 the Venetian master Pierpaolo dalle Masegne was called for the restoration of the building. Then in the eighteenth century it was almost completely transformed by the architect Domenico Rossi and at the beginning of the twentieth century a restoration attempted to give the facade a fourteenth-century look. Attached to the cathedral is the bell tower, a rather squat construction resting on the pre-existing baptistery, begun in March 1441 on a project by Cristoforo da Milano. The main portal, called of the Redemption, is the work of an unknown German master, and its execution dates back to the fourteenth century. It is decorated with high relief figures depicting the Redemption. Inside, the Baroque style predominates, so much so as to create a striking contrast with the Romanesque-Gothic exterior; all this due to the renovations carried out by the Manin family. (The Manins were a Venetian aristocratic family). Inside you can admire various works by Giuseppe Torretto, Pomponio Amalteo, Pordenone and Giambattista Tiepolo.
