From Holland to New Jersey: Maud Dahme

Holocaust Survivor, Maud Dahme, shared her story of survival and discussed her role in Holocaust education in NJ. Broadcast on Zoom with 3GNJ on April 28th at 8PM. About Maud Dahme: Maud was born on January 24,1936, in Amersfoort, Holland, to Hartog and Lilly Peper, and was later joined by her sister Rita, born February 23, 1938. Her father, Harry, was a restaurateur and her mother a homemaker. After Netherlands was invaded by Germany in 1940, anti-Jewish restrictions intensified; by 1941, Jewish children, including Maud, were forced out of public schools under orders from the Jewish Council. In July 1942, Jewish families were ordered to report for deportation, with many sent to Westerbork and then to Auschwitz. Warned by a family friend connected to the underground, six-year-old Maud and her four-year-old sister were separated from their parents and hidden in safe houses, while their parents also went into hiding with the help of courageous rescuers who risked severe punishment or death. After three years in hiding in Oldebroek and two different families later, Maud was reunited with her parents, though the separation left deep emotional scars, compounded by the devastating news that all their relatives had perished. In 1950, the family immigrated to the United States to rebuild their lives. Descendants of Holocaust Survivors is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operating in New Jersey as 3GNJ and in New York as 3GNY. Gifts to 3GNJ fuel local programming in New Jersey while strengthening the shared resources, leadership, and educational initiatives that make the greatest impact possible across the region.
