The 38th Waffen SS would become one of the last barriers to the advancing Americans… After Operation Varsity in late March of 1945, what was once the Third Reich was now a sorry shadow of its former self, but pockets of misled, and fierce resistance remained. Lt General Patch' 7th Army would head south towards Military District VII (Munich) while Pattons 3rd Army would head south and east into Bavaria. 14th Armored Division knew they needed to cross the Isar River and planned to do so at the small Bavarian town of Moosburg. By the evening of the 28th April they were a few miles from their objective.For the prisoners in STALAG VIIA, they were a few hours away from their liberation after years of imprisonment at the hands of the Wehrmacht.
