With their radars mounted on the fuselage of modified Boeing 707s, they provide the alliance with the necessary "foresight." The Airborne Early Warning and Control System, or AWACS for short, is an airborne radar system. AWACS is designed to provide early detection and advance warning of airspace. NATO currently operates a fleet of 14 of these aircraft at Geilenkirchen Air Base. The onboard crew of the AWACS typically consists of 16 soldiers from various NATO countries, who are divided between the flight deck and the mission deck. The Bundeswehr provides over a third of the personnel. The 14 AWACS stationed in Geilenkirchen near Aachen are an enormously valuable NATO tool for reconnaissance of air and ground movements deep within an enemy's territory and for commanding NATO aircraft in operations. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, regular flights are conducted to the alliance's eastern flank to conduct exercises with combat aircraft – including those of the new members Sweden and Finland – and to update the situation across the border.
