The Patriot air defense missile system ("Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target") is used to combat aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. With the committee's decision, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) can acquire four new Patriot systems as well as upgrade kits for the Patriot radars. The required nearly €1.4 billion will come from both the Bundeswehr's special fund and the regular defense budget. Since the Bundeswehr has already delivered two Patriot systems to Ukraine, approximately half of the funding will come from the federal budget allocated for the modernization of partner states. The deliveries to the Bundeswehr are to be completed by 2029. Patriot is a mobile air defense system for missile defense in the lower interceptor layer. It provides protection against aircraft and missiles with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers and has been in service since 1989. Patriot is intended to remain the most important system for the Bundeswehr's ground-based air defense capabilities well beyond 2030.
