Stralsund City Guide & Tour 🏰 UNESCO Old Town, Red Brick Wonders & Baltic Food in Germany ⛵🏙️🐟🥪

On day five we said goodbye to Ruegen island and hit the road once again stopping first at Stralsund. This Hanseatic city is steeped with history and is a UNESCO heritage site because its roads and city grid have remained the same over the years. With just a few hours to explore we got to see some of the impressive brick architecture, visit a fascinating museum dedicated to German playing cards and eat a Bismarck Herring sandwich for lunch. We left wishing we had a few more days instead of hours to linger. Our final stop for the day, after being on the road for a while, was at Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen. This open-air museum featured farm animals, theme rooms and rustic collection of artifacts. Our favorite activity was testing out the old bicycles including a Penny Farthing. 🏰 Stralsund Germany Guide: UNESCO Old Town, Red Brick Wonders & Baltic Food | Klockenhagen Museum Tour 🚶‍♂️🧱 Stepping Into History: Welcome to Stralsund This morning, we set out to visit the city of Stralsund, famed for its iconic red brick buildings and medieval streets that have stood the test of time. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stralsund captured our imagination with its perfectly preserved roads, dating back centuries. We kicked off our adventure with a walking tour that brought the city’s Hanseatic roots to life. ⛵🏙️ Hanseatic Heritage & Hidden Stories Founded in 1234, Stralsund once played a vital role as a Hanseatic trading city on the Baltic Sea. As we wandered through the cobbled lanes, we uncovered some fascinating facts: Stralsund’s Card Craze: Once a major producer of playing cards, Stralsund exported fun far and wide. Red Brick Gothic: The city’s skyline boasts some of the finest examples of Gothic red brick architecture in Northern Europe. A Presidential Bite: Even presidents and royals have dined at Stralsund’s famous restaurants—including George Bush himself! 🐟🥪 A Taste of Stralsund: Bismarck Herring Sandwich No trip to Stralsund would be complete without trying its most famous local snack: the Bismarck Herring sandwich. We dove right in and discovered a burst of tangy, juicy, slightly sour flavors—the kind of fish sandwich that truly defines the region’s Baltic cuisine. It’s a local classic for a reason! 🕰️⏳ Too Much to See in Half a Day! With only half a day to explore, we realized we barely scratched the surface of Stralsund. Still, we hope our clips capture the spirit of this enchanting city—a place that blends medieval charm, maritime history, and mouthwatering food. 🚜🌾 Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen: Life in Rural Mecklenburg Our afternoon took us out of the city and into the countryside at Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen—an open-air museum that recreates rural village life from centuries past. Here’s what we got up to: Farmyard Walks: We strolled through adorable villages, watched farm animals roam freely, and explored original houses and barns. Interactive Workshops: The museum is dotted with traditional workshops, from blacksmiths to bakers, each offering a glimpse into rural skills and trades. 🚜🎩 Trying Out Farm Equipment & Old Bikes We couldn’t resist getting hands-on! Potato Sorting Fun: We discovered an antique potato sorting machine that reminded us of bingo—spin, sort, and hope for a winner! Penny Farthing Challenge: Ever tried riding a hochrad (penny farthing)? We did—sort of! While it looked fun, getting on and off was a whole adventure in itself. Rusty Rides: We switched to a more manageable old bike—definitely a rattletrap, but easier than the high bike! 🏖️🪑 Chilling Baltic-Style: Strandkorb Beach Chairs We took a break Baltic Sea style by lounging in a traditional Strandkorb—a woven beach basket chair. These unique thrones offer shelter from the region’s summer winds, letting us soak up the sun and even enjoy a drink on a little built-in shelf. Every seaside holiday should have one! 📸🌟 Final Thoughts & Travel Tips From medieval city walks to living history at the open-air museum, our day in Stralsund and Klockenhagen was packed with discoveries, laughs, and new experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, or simply love quirky local traditions, this region is a must-visit. 💬✨ What Should We Explore Next?
