The day is proving very difficult in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula due to heavy snowfall between Galicia and Castile and León, caused by Storm Ingrid. Hundreds of trucks have been stranded between the provinces of Ourense and Zamora, and between Lugo and León. The DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) has prohibited them from traveling on highways due to the forecast of heavy snowfall. Galicia is bearing the brunt of the storm, which has also brought rain, wind, and heavy swells, keeping those living near the coast of A Coruña on edge. The wind and snow at very low elevations has forced the cancellation of classes and school bus routes in many municipalities in Galicia. There has been no school activity in Ourense, much of Lugo, and inland Pontevedra, affecting some 71,000 students. Storm Ingrid is affecting road, air, and rail traffic. Truck drivers are calling the traffic ban imposed by the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) extreme. The supermarket association is warning of potential shortages in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and criticizing the fact that the order was issued ten hours before it started snowing. The DGT defends the measure, arguing that the risk is sufficiently high. Furthermore, Galicia and the Cantabrian coast are also facing waves of up to nine meters.
