Buxtehude is a town with 41,000 inhabitants in Lower Saxony, a few kilometers southwest of Hamburg. The station was opened in 1881 and is located on the Niederelbebahn, Hamburg-Harburg - Cuxhaven. In 1928, the Buxtehude-Süd train station was opened on the south side of the existing train station by the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Railway. Since then, Buxtehude has also been the starting point of a railway line to Bremerhaven. Passenger traffic on this route was initially stopped in 1969. When the route was taken over by the Eisenbahn und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser in 1992, passenger traffic returned. For this purpose, the route's entrance to Buxtehude station was rebuilt. In return, the tracks from Buxtehude South were shut down except for the parking group. During the renovation work to extend the Hamburg S-Bahn to Stade, the remains of the southern station, the freight station and most of the sidings disappeared. A bus station and a parking lot have taken their place. The former track 3 was divided during the renovation. Track 3, with a platform height of 96cm, is used by the S-Bahn trains that only run to Buxtehude. Track 4, with a platform height of 55cm, is only used by EVB trains. There is a ramp between the tracks for leaving the station. Tracks 1 and 2 have platform heights of 76cm. The two platforms are connected by two underpasses. One is on the platforms, the other is at the eastern end of the platforms. The latter is located on the site of a level crossing that was closed in 1987. Two barriers stand as a memorial in front of the underpass. In addition to the EVB regional trains and the S-Bahn, the Hamburg - Cuxhaven regional express also stops at Buxtehude station.
