Menelusuri Hindia Belanda 1930: Dari Bandung ke Surabaya
Exploring the Dutch East Indies 1930: From Bandung to Surabaya Dawn broke over Priangan. The white smoke of a steam locomotive slowly rose from the Bandung platform, marking the beginning of a long journey across Java in 1930. A colonial express train pulled away from the city, penetrating the morning mist toward Cicalengka and the legendary Nagreg climb. The engine roared heavily as the iron wheels gripped the mountain rails. To the left and right, expanses of tea plantations stretched, while factory chimneys billowed smoke—testaments to the agricultural glory of the Pasundan region. In Cibatu, the pulse of life was bustling. Water was being filled, engines were being inspected, and traders and residents crowded the platform. The journey then continued, descending the mountains toward the vast plains of Central Java. Stopping in Yogyakarta, the tranquil city of the sultanate, international travelers descended to witness the splendor of Borobudur Temple—a stone masterpiece that had captivated the world since the early 20th century. Further east, endless stretches of sugarcane fields and giant sugar factories revealed the face of organized and massive colonial industry. By midday, the train entered Surabaya. Electric trams pass by, European cars pass through Simpang, and the elite dine at the Hellendoorn Restaurant in the Tunjungan area. This EyeFim Museum Amsterdam camera journey ends at Tanjung Perak Harbor—a maritime gateway where large steamships brought Javanese produce to world markets. A journey through rails, time, and history.
