It is important to imagine a drum swinging behind the clicks of metronome. To practice so-called bebop scale, you may try gentle swing feel with syllables like ‘wo da’. As variation, you may make it close to even 8th feel and change the syllables into ‘tu da’. That means I will do tonguing on every single notes in the second way. Feeling of shuffle, or to say the swing feel varies. For example, listening to Dexter Gordon and Cannonball Adderley, you can tell one is a way close to even 8th notes, the other is quite hard shuffle. To talk about pianist, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly have different ways to play 8th notes.
