Unfortunately, it didn't survive the winter due to issues with watering and a spider mite infestation, though it had produced plenty of small peppers before the cold set in. In April 2025, I extracted over a dozen seeds from the peppers I had saved. After they germinated, I grew them just like ordinary chili peppers. However, for various reasons, only one plant survived. It thrived in its pot, eventually producing hundreds of small peppers, and I ended up cultivating it as a bonsai-style plant. In regions with suitable temperatures, chili peppers are perennial plants. Therefore, if you can ensure a potted chili survives the winter safely in Germany, it can be kept long-term. However, many vegetable-type chili varieties grow too vigorously to achieve a bonsai aesthetic. Small chili varieties are naturally compact yet prolific bloomers, making them highly ornamental as miniature bonsai: you can enjoy the foliage in spring, the flowers in summer, and the fruit in autumn. If you want to grow a chili bonsai from seed, I recommend small varieties. The one I used is a small upward-facing type; the peppers are only the size of a fingernail, turn completely red when ripe, and point straight up toward the sky. These peppers are edible, too; even in a pot the size of the one shown in the video, you can harvest hundreds of peppers a year. While upward-facing varieties are great for aesthetics, other types—such as small round peppers or varieties resembling Sichuan peppercorns—are also visually appealing. With proper care, potted chili peppers can safely survive the winter in Germany. My method involves moving the plant indoors to a heated room and placing it on a south-facing windowsill before the first frost. The two main challenges during winter are related to moisture: indoor air—especially in heated rooms—is dry, so you need to mist the leaves occasionally to maintain humidity; prolonged dryness can trigger spider mite infestations. Ensuring adequate humidity for the potted chili significantly improves its chances of surviving the winter.
