Mealybugs No More: How to Get Rid of Mealybugs Using Homemade Insecticide. Mealybugs wreak havoc in any garden. If left uncontrolled, these pests can compromise your entire succulent cultivation. Root mealybugs are sap-sucking insects that infest the roots of succulents and feed on the sap, which is the plant's food. Besides hindering leaf formation and weakening the succulent, root mealybugs create small holes in the root tissue. These holes can be entry points for other pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, increasing the chances of your succulent being attacked and dying. One of the great secrets to combating this insect is understanding its life cycle: mealybugs are initially eggs, then nymphs, and finally adults with exoskeletons. Applying insecticide, whether industrial chemical or homemade organic, is useless. To eliminate an infestation, you need to apply it every 10 days, and then continue applying it to prevent further infestation. After all, mealybugs are very small and light insects that can be carried from one plant to another, even by the wind. If you are caring for your succulent, it is fertilized, has adequate light, proper watering, good substrate, and yet your plant is not growing, the problem may be in the roots. In today's video, I'll show you 3 ways to combat mealybugs: using industrial insecticide, a homemade insecticide recipe based on bleach, and finally using 70% alcohol. I highlight the second method, the homemade recipe based on sodium hypochlorite (bleach), where I do an immersion watering, because this way we can be sure that the entire substrate is wet. Bleach dilutes very effectively in water. Whatever insecticide you use, the most important thing is to know that you should repeat the application at least 3 times, even after controlling the root mealybug infestation. You should continue applying preventively so that the root mealybug does not return and harm your plants. Let's garden!
