At the same time, one hundred thousand new cars have been added to the city's traffic. The government's push for a Metropolitan Transport System Reform aims to encourage citizens to choose public transport over individual modes of transportation, make journeys faster, and improve mobility in the city. Along with the creation of the Metropolitan Transport Agency, the Ministry of Transport prepared a project that was discussed with the municipalities of Montevideo, Canelones, and San José. The most controversial point in this process was the idea of ​​building a tunnel under 18 de Julio Avenue for the exclusive use of the new BRT buses. After much back and forth and considerable tension, the debate concluded at the end of March with an alternative proposal, without an underground tunnel, presented by the administration of Mario Bergara. At that time, the details of this "plan B" were not disclosed, but they gradually emerged in the following days. Finally, a detailed presentation took place last Thursday when Bergara appeared before the Montevideo Departmental Board (JDM). What is known so far? How will traffic flow in the city center be resolved? What other changes will the system undergo beyond these main routes along Avenida Italia and 8 de Octubre?
