I’ve Never Watched Sword Art Online. Is Echoes of Aincrad Actually Good?

I have never watched a single episode of Sword Art Online, but when the gaming community started buzzing about Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, the gameplay caught my attention. Moving away from the typical high-fantasy hack-and-slash style, this game positions itself as a survival-oriented "souls-lite" action RPG where you get to play as your own custom avatar. As a massive fan of action RPGs and soulslikes, I decided to dive into the public demo on Steam/PlayStation to see how it holds up strictly from a gameplay perspective, with zero nostalgia or attachment to the source material. From its surprising Monster Hunter style quest loop and Code Vein inspired partner mechanics to its incredible soundtrack and Zelda-esque art style, there is a very solid foundation here. However, heavy-handed tutorials, bugs, and some seriously exhausting party banter hold it back from being a flawless victory. Are you checking out the demo ahead of its July 10th launch?
